Li Time Lithium phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries prove to be an excellent choice for RV enthusiasts seeking cost-effective and high-performing lithium batteries for their vehicles. Having experienced both the 100AH smaller LI Tim Mini (BCI Group 24 Size) batteries and recently transitioning to the 100AH larger self-heated lithium batteries in my 2023 Airstream 27FB, I find notable advantages in the latter. The self-heated lithium batteries, although slightly larger due to internal insulation and heating pads, are designed to maintain a temperature above 32 degrees. This feature ensures the batteries can continue to charge even in freezing conditions. This proves particularly beneficial when camping in colder weather, allowing my solar panels to efficiently recharge the batteries during daylight hours. Additionally, the larger batteries seamlessly fit into the Airstream, as demonstrated in the video above showcasing the battery box.

Advantages to Lithium Batteries in Airstreams
Lithium phosphate batteries, specifically lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries, are gaining popularity as an alternative to traditional lead-acid batteries in RVs (Recreational Vehicles) due to several benefits. Here are some advantages of using lithium phosphate batteries in RVs:
- Lightweight: Lithium phosphate batteries are significantly lighter than lead-acid batteries, reducing the overall weight of the RV. This is crucial for improving fuel efficiency and handling. These batteries are 40% lighter or more than lead acid AGM batteries.
- High Energy Density: LiFePO4 batteries have a higher energy density, meaning they can store more energy in a smaller and lighter package compared to lead-acid batteries. This results in more available energy for powering appliances and electronics in the RV.
- Long Cycle Life: Lithium phosphate batteries generally have a longer cycle life compared to lead-acid batteries. They can withstand a higher number of charge-discharge cycles, making them a more durable and cost-effective option over the long term.
- Fast Charging: Lithium phosphate batteries support faster charging times compared to lead-acid batteries. This can be beneficial when the RV needs a quick recharge, especially during short stops or when using solar panels.
- Maintenance-Free: LiFePO4 batteries require minimal maintenance compared to lead-acid batteries. They don’t require regular water topping-up or equalization charging, making them more user-friendly for RV owners.
- Consistent Voltage: Lithium phosphate batteries provide a more stable and consistent voltage output throughout the discharge cycle. This is advantageous for electronic devices and appliances that may be sensitive to voltage fluctuations.
- Efficient Use of Capacity: Lithium phosphate batteries can be discharged to a lower depth of discharge (DOD) without negatively impacting their lifespan. This allows RV owners to use a higher percentage of the battery’s capacity compared to lead-acid batteries.
- Space Efficiency: LiFePO4 batteries are generally more compact than lead-acid batteries, allowing for more flexible installation options in the limited space available in RVs.
- Environmentally Friendly: Lithium phosphate batteries are considered more environmentally friendly than lead-acid batteries. They are non-toxic, have a lower self-discharge rate, and are recyclable.
While lithium phosphate batteries offer these advantages, it’s important to consider the initial cost, as they are typically more expensive than traditional lead-acid batteries. However, many RV owners find the long-term benefits and performance improvements to justify the investment.
